and oh, is it glorious. They've been doing hot laps since 7am, and I can hear it from my bedroom. We're about 4kms from the track!

That's ~2.4 miles for the 'Muricans here!
Melbourne must be quiet if you can hear that from over 2 miles away.

Well it is before 8am on a Saturday.
The v10 is bloody loud though. Noisiest things in order:
1) F-18 flyover
2) Twin seat V10 driven by Coulthard
3) V8 Supercars
4) Porsche Cup cars
2015 F1 cars come about 9th. You can juuuuust hear them if the wind is right.

Watkins Glen, where I go to my racing here in the states, you can barely hear the cars at the gate with your windows up! And the track's in the middle of the country!

Melbourne is flat. Nebraska flat. Helps the acoustics.

New York isn't very flat though! Watkins Glen is situated among a lot of very nice rolling hills in the NY country side.

Amusingly I haven't sat in my seat yet. Was in a VIP suite yesterday (just missed out on meeting Charlize Theron!). At the start/finish line today.
